While spiritual direction as a formal relationship has been around since the Desert Fathers and Mothers in the 3rd and 4th centuries, it has only recently become more widely known. Spiritual direction, also known as spiritual accompaniment or companionship, or even soul friendship, is grounded in listening. The word “direction” is even a bit of a misnomer as the director isn’t directive, but creates and holds space for people to listen to their life. The true director is always God. This means directors are listening to the Holy Spirit as they accompany directees in the process of learning to notice, become aware of, and trust the way God is present in their own lives.
Directors offer insights, call attention to what they are noticing, ask questions, and continuously point back to the holy present in the every day. In both one-on-one and group settings, directors accompany and assist directees in listening for God in their own lives and experiences.
Typically, our sessions will include sharing and listening as well as times of silence. The sessions do not have a set agenda beyond what you would like to discuss (this could pertain to a time of transition, grief, discernment about next steps, relationships, faith questions, etc.). As God is present in all of life, everywhere and everything becomes an opportunity and an invitation to glimpse the holy.
Before entering into a spiritual direction relationship, I offer an initial, free virtual consultation in which we both have time to ask questions and assess if the partnership will be a good fit.
If you are interested in walking during the spiritual direction session, take a look at the Walk & Talk offerings.
