Poems from On High

Each of these five poems was written on a recent flight from Washington, DC to Colorado, inspired by the view of the landscape below from 30,000+ feet.

Golden thread of silt and commerce
Cities strung like pearls
Along your banks
Where do you go?
Where is your beginning?
To what end do you flow?

Fossilized dinosaur spines
or maybe…
branching trees
reclining for an ancient nap
or even…
pinions scattered about
by some colossal winged creature.
That’s what you are,
you tree-covered mountains and valleys,
from the vantage of a cloudless sky.

Concentric circles
depict in graphic geometry
the labyrinthine lanes of the farmer.

Furrows –
a groovy vinyl record –
radiating from center out,
the songs of the seasons
drifting under
wide
open
sky.

A giants’ game of Connect Four
chips clattering on loamy earth
all for fruitful gain.

And a photo just for fun! It looks like someone was scribbling/doodling 😊 For a second group of these poems, click here.
